The city's unusual name carries a personal story. Willamina Creek was named for early settler Willamina Craig Williams after she fell from her horse into the creek. Williams arrived in Oregon in 1845 with her first husband, James Maley, and his daughter. After James Maley's death in 1847, she married Enos Williams in 1848 and the couple settled in what is now Amity. The first post office was established in 1855 on the James Brown land claim, moving several times before a permanent office opened in 1878. That same year, a gristmill and sawmill were built, followed by the platting of the townsite in 1879.
