Willis is an unincorporated community located in Augusta Charter Township in southeastern Washtenaw County, Michigan, about thirteen miles southeast of Ann Arbor. Sitting at an elevation of 686 feet above sea level, Willis is centered along Willis Road between Potterville Drive and Bunton Road, with the nearby community of Whittaker just a few miles to the southwest. The area is served by Lincoln Consolidated School District.
Willis has a rich railroad heritage. The region's first post office, established in 1833, was originally named Paint Creek. The community itself grew from the construction of a Grand Trunk Railway line in 1880, when the railroad decided to route through Willis rather than through the competing hamlets of Eaton Mills and Paint Creek. Early settler Willis L. Potter donated land for the train station near Howell's general store, which remains the oldest building still standing in the community and now operates as Bonehead's Restaurant. The arrival of the railroad sparked a building boom, including three boarding houses constructed at the corner of Willis and Meridian for railroad workers. Eventually, businesses from the nearby settlements migrated to the new village of Willis. The original Paint Creek post office was renamed Newcomb in 1881 and finally established as Willis on December 15, 1887, taking its name from Potter's first name. Today, the Willis post office continues operating at 8790 Bunton Road under the 48191 ZIP Code, and a single railway line operated by Norfolk Southern Railway still runs diagonally through the community, though the historic Willis Station no longer exists.
