Wrangell is a borough in southeast Alaska with deep roots in Indigenous and Russian colonial history. As of the 2020 census, the population was approximately 2,127, reflecting a decline from 2,369 in 2010. The community was incorporated as a Unified Home Rule Borough on May 30, 2008, and is located in the northwest corner of Wrangell Island at 56°28′15″N 132°22′36″W.
The Tlingit people have inhabited this area for thousands of years and remain central to Wrangell's identity. According to Naanyaa.aayí clan traditions, Tlingit ancestors migrated down the Stikine River during glacial times, eventually settling in numerous coastal villages. The Tlingit name for the area, Ḵaachx̱ana.áakʼw, means "Ḵaachx̱án's little lake," referring to a man who lived in a smokehouse on the rear shore. The local Tlingit people call themselves the Shtaxʼhéen Ḵwáan after the nearby Stikine River and are enrolled in the Wrangell Cooperative Association, a federally recognized tribe.
Russians founded one of Alaska's oldest non-Native settlements here in 1811 when they began trading furs with local Tlingit. In 1834, Baron Ferdinand Friedrich Wrangel ordered construction of Redoubt Saint Dionysius at present-day Wrangell. The British Hudson's Bay Company leased the fort in 1839, renaming it Fort Stikine, but abandoned it in 1849 after sea otter and beaver stocks were depleted. Following the United States purchase of Alaska in 1867, the military established Fort Wrangell in 1868, which operated until 1877. The community subsequently grew through commerce with gold prospectors during rushes in 1861, 1874 to 1877, and 1897.
