Yucca is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Mohave County, Arizona, situated along Interstate 40 southwest of Kingman in the Sacramento Valley. The 2020 census recorded a population of 96, reflecting a decline from 126 residents in 2010.
The community's roots trace to the 1880s, when Yucca began as an order office and water fill station for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, part of a transcontinental line running from St. Louis, Missouri to Needles, California that remains a major freight corridor to Southern California. In 1918, Yucca established its own cemetery. The town experienced significant development during World War II when the United States Army Air Forces purchased over 2,200 acres to develop the Yucca Army Airfield for pilot training. Following the war, Ford Motor Company purchased the airfield in 1954 and converted it into the Arizona Proving Ground, comprising nearly 4,000 acres. Chrysler later acquired these proving grounds from Ford in November 2007 for 34.9 million dollars.
Yucca's most prosperous period came in 1952 when Route 66 was realigned to pass through the community, bringing motels, cafés, and a major truck stop. This golden era ended in the early 1970s when Interstate 40 replaced that section of Route 66, shifting traffic to larger nearby towns. By 2008, only a handful of businesses remained: a general store and café, post office, automotive service center, real estate office, and bar. Recent residential developments, including the Stage Coach Trails subdivision created after a 1997 land exchange, may provide opportunities for future growth in the area.
