Zigzag is an unincorporated community nestled in Clackamas County, Oregon, within the Mount Hood Corridor. Located along U.S. Route 26 between Rhododendron and Welches, it forms part of the Villages at Mount Hood, a collection of communities that extends from Sandy to Government Camp. The community takes its name from the nearby Zigzag River, a tributary of the Sandy River, which flows into the Columbia River.
The area's distinctive name likely originates not from the river's shape, but from the manner in which travelers navigated the steep terrain. In October 1845, pioneer Joel Palmer crossed Zigzag Canyon near Mount Hood's timberline and documented the challenging descent in his journal, describing how travelers zigzagged back and forth down the ravine. Since the Zigzag River itself is no more crooked than adjoining streams, the name most likely came from this pattern of crossing rather than the river's alignment.
Zigzag's development continued into the twentieth century. A post office operated here from 1917, serving the community intermittently until 1974, though it was temporarily located in what is now Rhododendron. The area is home to several historic structures of note, including the 1935 Zigzag Ranger Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. William John Lenz, son of the founder of Lenz in Hood River County, constructed the rustic log ZigZag Inn and numerous other notable buildings in the area. St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, also a registered historic property, was formerly located in the Zigzag area.
