Auburn's history begins with Creek Nation inhabitation, followed by American settlement opening in 1832 with the Treaty of Cusseta. The Civil War devastated Auburn's economy, which struggled through the late 1800s despite the college's transformation into a land grant institution in 1872. Recovery began in the 1890s when the college became Alabama's first four-year institution to admit women. Growth accelerated after World War II as returning soldiers attended on the G.I. Bill. The construction of Interstate 85 beginning in 1957 further boosted development. Governmental reforms in 1980 shifted Auburn toward industrial diversification, and by 2003, the city's population had grown 65 percent and its economy expanded 220 percent.
