Phenix City is a city straddling Lee and Russell counties in southeastern Alabama, serving as the county seat of Russell County. With a 2020 population of 38,817, the city lies immediately west of Columbus, Georgia, across the Chattahoochee River. Due to its strong economic ties to Columbus, Phenix City observes Eastern Time rather than Central Time like the rest of Alabama, and most of the city is included in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city began as two separate communities: Girard in Russell County and Brownville in Lee County. Originally called Girard in the south and confusingly known as both Brownville and Lively in the north, the communities were formally incorporated by the state legislature on February 23, 1883. Within a decade, the name changed to Phenix City, though whether it was named after Phenix Mills in nearby Columbus, Georgia or the mythical phoenix bird remains uncertain. The two towns formally merged on August 9, 1923, and in 1932, the Lee County portion was consolidated into Russell County. By 1934 and 1935, Phenix City became the sole county seat of Russell County.
In 2007, BusinessWeek named Phenix City the nation's number one best affordable suburb to raise a family. The city is home to Chattahoochee Valley Community College, a public two-year institution with a 100 percent acceptance rate, and hosts a satellite campus of Troy University. As of 2023, Eddie N.
