Boaz is a city straddling Marshall and Etowah counties in northeastern Alabama, with a 2020 population of 10,107. First settled in the 1850s, the town was officially founded on November 11, 1878, by the Sparks family of Georgia and incorporated in 1897. It was named after the biblical figure Boaz, and a post office has operated there since 1887. Located atop Sand Mountain at 1,080 feet above sea level, Boaz sits along U.S. Route 431, positioned between Albertville to the north and Gadsden to the south.

Before World War II, Boaz relied primarily on cotton cultivation until boll weevil infestations and the Great Depression prompted a shift toward livestock and poultry farming. In the early 1980s, Boaz gained prominence as a retail destination when the VF Corporation opened an outlet store in an abandoned factory. This success sparked rapid growth in the outlet retail sector, and by the late 1980s, the city attracted five million visitors annually across 130 outlet stores. However, retail fortunes reversed in subsequent decades as retailers departed due to declining customer bases, reducing to eighty stores by the early 1990s and further declining during the Great Recession of the 2000s. In 2016, three buildings of the outlet center were demolished. Today, several historic properties in Boaz are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
