Rainbow City is a city in Etowah County, Alabama, that incorporated in 1950 and is part of the Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 10,191. The name Rainbow City comes from U.S. Highway 411, known locally as Rainbow Drive, which runs through the middle of the city.
The area has a rich history stretching back centuries. Hernando de Soto's troops were the first recorded visitors in 1540. Beginning in 1818, families from the Carolinas and Georgia migrated to the region and homesteaded land near the Coosa River, initially calling the settlement "Coosa Bend." The area later became known as "Morgan's Cross Road," named for its location at the intersection of the Gadsden-Ashville Road and Gilbert's Ferry Road.
Early community institutions shaped Rainbow City's development. On April 2, 1831, a church was organized at the Harmony Meeting House, and within a few years the first Baptist association was formed, with Harmony as one of its five original members. The adjacent Old Harmony Cemetery has been designated a historic landmark. Education became important when John Sheffield Jones, grandson of an original settler, donated one thousand dollars and land for the first John S. Jones Elementary School. Though that building later burned, a new elementary school was constructed and continues serving Rainbow City students today.
Today, the city is located in southern Etowah County, bordered by Gadsden to the northeast and the Coosa River to the southeast, with a total area of 25.6 square miles.
