Carbon Hill is a city in Walker County, Alabama, with roots reaching back to the discovery of coal in the region. Settled in 1886 by miners and railroad workers, the community grew rapidly under the development of the Galloway Coal Company, which purchased local mines in 1890 and transformed them into a commercial success. A post office was established in 1887, and by the following year, the community had grown enough to support its own church. The town officially incorporated on February 14, 1891, with John T. Anderson serving as its first mayor. The founding fathers chose this date intentionally, wishing for the town to be known as The Village of Love and Luck, drawing on Scottish cultural traditions that viewed coal as a symbol of warmth and fortune.
Throughout its history, Carbon Hill has faced significant natural disasters. A devastating tornado struck in 1917, killing six people and destroying two hundred homes. Another powerful tornado hit in 2002, and in 2020, an EF1 tornado caused considerable damage, though no deaths were reported. Despite these challenges, the community showed resilience, particularly during the Great Depression when residents skillfully utilized federal resources to construct a new high school and improve local infrastructure.
