Cordova is a city in Walker County, Alabama with a population of 1,728 as of the 2020 census. Located in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near the Mulberry Fork of the Warrior River, Cordova began as a settlement originally called "Dent" or "Dent's Place." Captain Benjamin M. Long renamed it Cordova in 1859 after a city in Mexico where he had been stationed during the Mexican-American War. Long opened a mercantile shop and helped establish the city's early industries by providing land for their development.
The defining force in Cordova's history was the Indian Head Textile Mills, brought to the city by Nashua Manufacturing Company from New Hampshire. The mill transformed Cordova into a thriving textile hub, creating numerous jobs and a company village complete with over one hundred houses and a school. The Indian Head Mills was one of the most highly awarded textile mills during World War II, with products exceeding all government standards. Two major railways arrived to serve the mill, connecting Cordova to the surrounding region. However, when the mill closed after 1962, over eight hundred workers lost their jobs, leading to significant population decline and economic hardship.
Cordova faced additional challenges in 2011 when an EF4 tornado struck in the afternoon, destroying much of the historic downtown district including city hall, the police station, and fire station. Since then, the city has undertaken substantial recovery projects totaling millions of dollars. Today, Cordova looks toward future growth through its access to major transportation routes and the addition of BAE Systems.
