Cedarville, a census-designated place in Modoc County, sits twenty miles east of Alturas at an elevation of 4,652 feet in the Surprise Valley. Known to the Northern Paiute as pasɨɨbi, the town was founded around 1864 as a stopping place for wagon trains traveling through the region. Originally called Deep Creek, it took its current name from Cedarville, Ohio. In 1867, William Cressler and John Bonner established a trading post there, the first mercantile business in Modoc County, serving emigrants bound for California and Oregon as well as local settlers. Bonner and Cressler also built the first road over Cedar Pass, connecting Surprise Valley to Alturas and the wider county. The town's first post office opened in 1869. By 1880, Cedarville had become the largest town in the valley with approximately 220 residents, a position it solidified after Fort Bidwell was demilitarized and the area became part of newly formed Modoc County in 1874. The town's central location and access to Cedar Pass made it the natural hub for the valley's population and commerce. A 1913 account noted a population of about 500, with the Laxague Lumber Company mill providing employment for eighteen to sixty residents. Today, Cedarville's population has declined to 437 as of the 2020 census, down from 514 in 2010.
