Fort Bidwell is a small community in northeastern Modoc County, situated 32 miles northeast of Alturas at an elevation of 4,564 feet in the north end of Surprise Valley. The settlement grew from a military fort established in 1865 to protect the Red Bluff trail to the Owhyhee Mines of Idaho. General John Bidwell supported the petition from Red Bluff settlers, and the U.S. Army commissioned seven forts for this purpose. Major Williamson selected a site near Fandango Pass at the base of the Warner Mountains, and construction orders were issued on June 10, 1865. Although Surprise Valley settlers welcomed Army protection, ranchers who lost lands to the fort filed damage claims against the government. The fort served as a base for operations during the Snake War, which lasted until 1868, and subsequent conflicts including the Modoc War of 1872–73 and the Bannock and Nez Perce campaigns. The Army maintained Fort Bidwell until 1890, even as traffic on the Red Bluff route declined after the Central Pacific Railroad extended into Nevada in 1868. The post office opened in 1868. By 1913, the community had about 200 residents and included a school and reservation for the Northern Paiute Kidütökadö band. Today, Fort Bidwell is registered as California Historical Landmark #430 and is home to the Fort Bidwell Indian Community, affiliated with the Paiute nation. The 2020 census reported a population of 180, with approximately 45 percent Native American residents.
