Citronelle is a city located on the northern border of Mobile County, Alabama, about 34 miles north of Mobile. With a population of 3,946 at the 2020 census, it is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. The area has a long human history, inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before the historic Choctaw and Creek peoples hunted there. French explorers arrived in the 18th century and discovered the region's healing herbs and mineral springs. The area was settled in 1811 and incorporated as a jurisdiction in 1892. The town's name comes from the citronella plant and reflects its French heritage. In the late 19th century, Citronelle became a popular resort destination, with many hotels built to accommodate visitors drawn by the climate and healing waters. An important Civil War event occurred here on May 4, 1865, when Lieutenant General Richard Taylor surrendered one of the last significant Confederate armies beneath the Surrender Oak, marking the third in a series of major army surrenders that ended the war. Today, the city commemorates this history with annual reenactments, though the historic oak was destroyed by a hurricane in 1902. The discovery of oil in 1955 transformed Citronelle's identity. Oil was found in the Citronelle Dome, a geological salt formation, at a depth of 10,879 feet in the Glen Rose Formation. This discovery pioneered deep oil field development in the region. Citronelle is now known as the oil capital of Alabama.
