Saraland is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, and a suburb of Mobile. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 16,171, representing significant growth from 13,405 residents in 2010. The city is the third largest in Mobile County and forms part of the Mobile metropolitan area.
The community's origins trace back to a Spanish land grant to Don Diego Alvarez. Early settlers, including families named Rice, Hartley, Moore, LaCoste, Williams, Tool, and Cleveland, began legally purchasing property in 1800. The area was first called Alvarez Station, then Cleveland Station, before receiving its present name. According to local accounts, C.J. DeWitt, a retired minister editor who moved south in 1890, named the city after his wife Sara. DeWitt opened the first post office on the Southern Railroad in 1895.
Saraland remained sparsely populated through the early twentieth century until Mobile's northward expansion in the 1940s and 1950s spurred growth. The city was incorporated in 1957 with only 125 residents, but annexations quickly increased the population to 4,595 by the 1960 census and to 9,844 by 1980.
The city is strategically located along major transportation routes, with U.S. Route 43 and Interstate 65 serving as the main north-south corridors. Saraland covers 32.4 square miles and is drained by Bayou Sara, an east-flowing tributary of the Mobile River. The community is bordered by Prichard, Chickasaw, Mobile, Satsuma, and Creola.
