Delmar is a town in Sussex County, Delaware situated along the Maryland border on the Transpeninsular Line. The town was founded in October 1859 when the Delaware Railroad extended to Delaware's southern boundary. The name itself blends Delaware and Maryland. Delmar remained small until 1884, when the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad completed a line connecting the Delmarva Peninsula to Cape Charles, Virginia and established ferry service across the Chesapeake Bay. This development transformed Delmar into a railroad hub and boom town, with its population reaching 680 by 1889 as railroad workers and businesses relocated there.
The town's growth came with challenges. Major fires in 1892 and 1901 nearly destroyed Delmar, though residents rebuilt each time. Early cooperation between the Maryland and Delaware halves was limited until 1927, when a joint sewerage system was constructed. A pivotal moment came in 1949 when the Lions Club sponsored consolidation of the separate school systems, with junior and senior high schools merged. This educational achievement represented a significant step toward eliminating the jurisdictional barrier dividing the town.
