Lewes, pronounced "LOO-əss," is an incorporated city located on the Delaware Bay in eastern Sussex County, Delaware. According to the 2020 census, the city is home to 3,303 residents. Along with nearby Rehoboth Beach, Lewes serves as one of the principal cities in Delaware's rapidly growing Cape Region and falls within the Salisbury, Maryland–Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city's history stretches back to 1631, when Dutch settlers established the first European settlement in Delaware at a whaling and trading post they called Zwaanendael, or Swan Valley. This early colony was short-lived, however, as local Lenape Indians killed all 32 settlers in 1632. The area saw several subsequent attempts at settlement, including a Mennonite community established in 1663 that was destroyed by English forces the following year. After a period of struggle, a new settlement gradually developed around the Hoernkills. In 1682, William Penn renamed the settlement Lewes in honor of the town of Lewes in Sussex County, England.
Lewes became the county seat of Sussex County and was incorporated as a city on February 2, 1818. The town played a role in the War of 1812, when Royal Navy vessels briefly bombarded it in April 1813, leaving a cannonball lodged in what is now Cannonball House, the town's maritime museum. During World War II, the United States established Fort Miles on nearby Cape Henlopen to defend Delaware Bay and regional industrial facilities. The town's historical significance is reflected in numerous sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places and its proud motto, "The First Town in The First State."
