Eielson Air Force Base stands about 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, near Moose Creek, as a vital installation in Alaska's defense and training infrastructure. Established in 1943 as Mile 26 Satellite Field during World War II, the base was redesignated Eielson Air Force Base on January 13, 1948, in honor of polar pilot Carl Ben Eielson, an Alaska aviation pioneer who died in a 1929 rescue mission attempt over the Bering Sea. After closing at the war's end, Eielson reopened in September 1946 and became a center for Arctic training and Cold War operations.
