The town's significance as a gateway stems from its history as the terminus of the Yosemite Valley Railroad, which once connected visitors to the national park's entrance.
El Portal's development began in the early twentieth century. The community's first post office opened in 1907, the same year construction began on the Hotel Del Portal, a four-story establishment built by a subsidiary of the Yosemite Valley Railroad. The hotel was completed in 1908 and offered visitors a four-hour railway journey from Merced. Tragically, a fire sparked by a defective attic flue destroyed the hotel on October 27, 1917, along with important records belonging to the Desmond Company.
Today, El Portal remains a modest community of 372 residents according to the 2020 census, down from 474 in 2010. The town includes essential services such as a post office, community center, and school, along with local businesses including two hotels, a general store, and a gas station. The community sits at an elevation of 1,939 feet and is partly under the administrative jurisdiction of Yosemite National Park, maintaining its historic role as a gateway to the natural wonders beyond.
