Commerce flourished alongside mining, supported by stores, saloons, gambling halls, and freight businesses. In 1855, Italian-born Domenico Ghirardelli, who later became a renowned San Francisco chocolate manufacturer, opened a general store to serve the mining district before selling it in 1858.
Hornitos became Mariposa County's first and only incorporated town in 1871, reflecting its importance during the mining boom. As mining declined, so did the town's population and commercial vitality.
