Equality is a village in Gallatin County, Illinois, with a population of 539 as of the 2020 census. Located in western Gallatin County on the north side of the Saline River, Equality holds significant historical importance to the region. The village was officially established on January 26, 1826, by the General Assembly as the county seat of Gallatin County. A courthouse was constructed in 1827 at a cost of 1,300 dollars and served the county until 1851, when legal documents were relocated to Shawneetown. The building subsequently functioned as a school, church, and meeting place for local societies before being destroyed by fire on November 28, 1894.
The area's most notable history centers on salt production. Native Americans and French settlers, beginning as early as 1735, extracted salt from the Great Salt Springs near Equality. Following an 1803 treaty in which American Indians ceded the springs to the US government, the operation became known as the United States Saline. The government leased the springs and required holders to produce specific quantities of salt annually or face penalties. Salt manufacturing became integral to the region's economy during the 1820s, though the industry relied heavily on enslaved labor. The 1820 census recorded 239 slaves or servants in Gallatin County. Equality remained the county seat until 1847, when Saline County was formed. Today, the village's two points of interest include the Crenshaw House and the Garden of the Gods Wilderness.
