Junction is a small village located in Gold Hill Township at the center of Gallatin County, Illinois, situated along Illinois Route 13 a few miles west of the Ohio River. The village was founded in the 1880s and takes its name from its strategic location at the junction of the L&N and B&O railroads. When a post office was established in 1884, the settlement was called "Cypress Junction," a name that evolved to "Junction City" in 1888 before being shortened to simply "Junction" in 1894. Today, Junction is home to just 56 residents according to the 2020 census, with a total area of less than one square mile.
The village's geography has shaped its history in significant ways. Located in a relatively flat area near the Saline River, a tributary of the Ohio, Junction remains vulnerable to flooding. A major flood in March 1997 displaced several residents and blocked all but one road into the village. Despite its small size, Junction has connections to larger historical events. The nearby Hickory Hill mansion, built in the nineteenth century about five miles west of the village, was infamously known as the "Old Slave House." This property belonged to John Hart Crenshaw, an illegal slave trader and slave breeder who used the mansion as a front for kidnapping free Black people for illegal sale into slavery through the Reverse Underground Railroad. In more recent history, Junction General Baptist Church was destroyed by fire on June 1, 2022, when lightning struck its steeple.
