Florence is a coastal city located in Lane County, Oregon, situated at the mouth of the Siuslaw River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Positioned along U.S. Route 101 roughly midway between Newport and Coos Bay, Florence serves as a gateway to the Oregon Coast. As of August 2023, the city had a population of 9,553 residents.
The area was originally home to the Siuslaw tribe of Native Americans. The city's name comes from one of two sources: some attribute it to state senator A. B. Florence, who represented Lane County from 1858 to 1860, while others claim it was named after a French vessel that wrecked at the mouth of the Siuslaw River on February 17, 1875.
Florence has earned a distinctive place in American history through two memorable events. On November 12, 1970, the city became famous when the Oregon Department of Transportation attempted to dispose of a beached whale using twenty cases of explosives. The blast went awry, with debris traveling in unexpected directions and crushing a car a quarter mile away. In 2020, residents voted to commemorate this unusual event by naming a new park Exploding Whale Memorial Park.
The city also gained national attention in 1977 when the Florence City Council inadvertently approved a poorly-worded ordinance on November 26 that accidentally banned sexual activity in private places. City officials declined to enforce the measure until it could be amended.
