Westfir is a small city in Lane County, Oregon, situated approximately 40 miles southeast of Eugene and 4 miles west of Oakridge within the Willamette National Forest. The community had a population of 259 at the 2020 census. The town was born from the lumber industry, with the name Westfir first adopted in July 1923, derived from the Western Lumber Company, which produced Douglas-fir lumber and established the community as a company town. A post office opened that November. The Western Lumber Company supplied the Southern Pacific Railroad during the 1920s as it constructed its line over Willamette Pass between Eugene and Klamath Falls. The mill changed hands several times, eventually becoming the Edward Hines Lumber Company, which added a plywood mill in 1952. When Hines closed operations and sold the town in 1977, local residents voted to incorporate in 1979 to bring utilities into public ownership. Mill operations ceased entirely in 1984 following a series of fires. A notable landmark is the Office Bridge, built in 1944 across the North Fork Middle Fork Willamette River to connect the Westfir Lumber Company mill to its main office. Recognized as Oregon's longest existing covered bridge, it represents the area's timber heritage. Today, the region experiences warm, dry summers characteristic of a Mediterranean climate, and the town remains a small rural community nestled in the forest landscape.
