Gary was established in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation, which chose a stretch of sand dunes and swampland on the southern shore of Lake Michigan for a new steelmaking complex. The city was named for Elbert H. Gary, the corporation's chairman. A U.S. Steel subsidiary, the Gary Land Company, laid out the town and its worker housing, and the first stake was driven at the corner of Fifth and Broadway in April 1906.
Mill and town were built at the same time. Engineers relocated the Grand Calumet River, and the first ore boat entered the new harbor on July 23, 1908. Gary Works produced its first steel in early 1909. The mill drew European immigrants, Black migrants from the South, and Mexican workers, and by 1920 residents represented more than fifty nationalities.
In 1967 Richard G. Hatcher was elected mayor, becoming one of the first African Americans chosen to lead a major American city, and in 1972 Gary hosted the National Black Political Convention. Employment at Gary Works fell from more than 20,000 at midcentury to about 7,500 by the end of the century, and the city's population also declined in later decades. Gary remains the site of the steel works around which it was founded.
