Crown Point is the county seat of Lake County, Indiana, and home to a population of 34,884 according to the 2023 American Community Survey. Known as the "Hub of Lake County" due to its central location, the city was incorporated in 1868, though its history stretches back further. Solon Robinson and his family became the first settlers on October 31, 1834, staking a claim in what would eventually become Crown Point. When Lake County was incorporated in February 1837, Robinson funded a five-hundred-dollar wooden courthouse that convinced the legislature to move the county seat from Liverpool to Crown Point. A larger courthouse and clock tower, now called the Grand Old Lady, began construction in 1878 and became the defining landmark of downtown Crown Point, with further additions made between 1907 and 1928.
The city earned the nickname "Marriage Mill" because it had no waiting period for marriage licenses, attracting famous couples including Tom Mix, Rudolph Valentino, and Muhammad Ali. Crown Point also holds a significant place in American crime history. On March 3, 1934, FBI Public Enemy Number One John Dillinger escaped from the supposedly escape-proof Lake County Jail while brandishing a hand-carved wooden gun. The daring escape, which included Dillinger driving away in Sheriff Lillian Holley's new V-8 Ford, was later depicted in the 2009 film Public Enemies, which was partially filmed at the historic jail facility. The Old Lake County Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
