Glenpool is a city in Tulsa County, Oklahoma, located approximately fifteen miles south of downtown Tulsa on U.S. Route 75. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 14,040, representing significant growth of nearly thirty percent since 2010, when the population was 10,808. Today, Glenpool serves as a commuter town for the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city's history is deeply rooted in Oklahoma's oil boom. On November 22, 1905, wildcatters Robert Galbreath Jr. and Frank Chesley struck oil on farmland owned by Creek Indian Ida E. Glenn, creating the first gusher in what became known as the Glenn Pool. This discovery sparked rapid development in the region and brought thousands of people to the area, from lease buyers to laborers to swindlers. Daily production soon exceeded 120,000 barrels. By 1907, nearly 3,000 people had moved to the area, though the actual town settlement grew more slowly. The post office opened on January 31, 1908, and the city was incorporated in 1917, officially changing its name to Glenpool in 1924.
The Glenn Pool Oil Field became remarkably productive, with ninety-four percent of wildcat wells producing oil in the early years. Over its lifetime, the field has produced more than 340 million barrels of oil. Though the field still produces a small amount today using modern techniques, Glenpool has evolved into a bedroom community. The city celebrates its heritage annually with Black Gold Days, a three-day family event featuring food, music, arts and crafts, and a parade.
