Guin, Alabama, incorporated in December 1889 and takes its name from Dr. Jeremiah Guin, a young country doctor from Tuscaloosa County. In 1870, Dr. Guin purchased a farm that had previously served as Haley's Trading Post, a country store built on a major cattle droving route between the north and south. The doctor relocated the town's center about a mile east of the original trading post. In the town's early years, lumber operations became central to the local economy, with a sawmill operated by the Kenney Lumber Company and later the Brown Lumber Company providing cut timber to the community.
Guin experienced significant hardship on April 3, 1974, when an F5 tornado struck during the Super Outbreak, the second-largest tornado outbreak on record. The storm claimed twenty-three lives and devastated the city. In more recent history, on July 13, 2010, Guin's citizens voted to allow the sale of alcohol, making Guin the first city in Marion County to do so since Prohibition.
Located in southern Marion County, Guin sits at the intersection of U.S. Routes 43 and 278. The city covers 15.0 square miles and is positioned near Hamilton, the county seat, located 13 miles to the north. According to the 2020 census, Guin had a population of 2,195 residents. Purgatory Creek flows through the southern portion of the city, eventually connecting to the Tombigbee River watershed.
