Winfield is a city situated in northwest Alabama, located in Marion and Fayette counties, approximately 26 miles east of the Mississippi state line. With a population of 4,845 at the 2020 census, it is the second largest city in Marion County. The area sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range and has a long history of human presence, beginning with the Chickasaw people who used the region for hunting and fishing. The site was originally called Luxapallila, named after the adjacent creek. As settlers arrived in greater numbers, the community became known as Needmore before being incorporated and renamed Winfield in honor of General Winfield Scott, either in 1887 or 1891.
Winfield experiences a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Rainfall is abundant, averaging about 52 inches yearly, with March being the wettest month. January temperatures average a high of 53 degrees Fahrenheit, while July sees average highs around 90.6 degrees. Snowfall is rare, averaging only 0.5 inches per year.
