Headland is the largest city in Henry County, Alabama, and part of the Dothan metropolitan area. Founded in 1871 by James Joshua Head as "Head's Land," the city has grown substantially over its history. Head patented the land, plotted the town, and built his home there, with the post office opening that same year on October 10. Head laid off the Public Square with hopes of attracting a county courthouse, though Henry County voters decided against locating one there in elections held in 1879 and 1885. The city incorporated in 1884 with thirty petitioners and saw the railroad arrive in 1893, along with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad Depot, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
The Spirit of the American Doughboy statue, erected in 1926 as a tribute to the town's military dead, was Henry County's first public statue. The population has grown steadily, reaching 4,973 residents in the 2020 census, up from 4,510 in 2010. Headland became Henry County's largest city by 1960, lost that status in 1970, but regained and has maintained it since 1980. The city is strategically located in the southwest corner of Henry County, with U.S. Route 431 and Alabama State Route 134 providing convenient connections to surrounding communities.
