Newville is a town located in southwestern Henry County, Alabama, situated within the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community traces its origins to James Madison Wells, who founded a village called Wells around 1882. When the Abbeville Southern Railroad extended tracks through the area in 1893, the settlement became known as Wells Station. A post office was established in 1894, and the town formally incorporated under its present name, Newville, in 1903.
During the early twentieth century, Newville flourished as a developing community, supported by merchants, banks, churches, schools, sawmills, cotton gins, and various civic institutions. The town's prosperity was sustained by agricultural commerce and local industry. However, the Great Depression marked the beginning of a gradual decline. The subsequent mechanization of farming and the loss of commercial activity contributed to the town's diminished economic vitality in the decades that followed.
Education played an important role in Newville's history. The first known school operated at Center Church in 1881. Newville High School opened in 1929 and operated until 1968. The community also supported Rosenwald High School, which began as the Jacksonian Enterprise School in 1894 and later received assistance from the Rosenwald Foundation in 1919. The Newville Baptist Church Cemetery, established with land donated by James M. and Catherine Wells in 1887, contains over seven hundred marked and unmarked graves and was listed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register in 2005. According to the 2020 census, Newville had a population of 544 residents.
