Jerome is an unincorporated community located in northeastern Hillsdale County within Somerset Township in southeast Michigan. Though it lacks legal autonomy as an unincorporated area, Jerome maintains its own post office serving the 49249 ZIP code and has a distinct identity shaped by its past as a railway hub.
The community was officially platted on April 18, 1871, by landowner Jerome Smith, who named it after himself and became the first postmaster. The establishment of the Detroit, Hillsdale and Indiana Railroad through the forested area in 1869 spurred rapid settlement and development. By 1879, Jerome had grown into a thriving mercantile and farming community with numerous businesses including general stores, a hotel, boarding house, blacksmith, meat market, and a congregational church. The railroad allowed merchants to ship grain and other agricultural products far and wide, and the Jerome Creamery Company, established in 1899, used the rails to transport its goods as far north as Pontiac.
A large brick schoolhouse was built in 1906 and served Jerome's students until the district consolidated with North Adams schools in the early 1950s. The building later became a community center and public park. Today, Jerome is no longer served by railroads, as both lines that once ran through the community have been disestablished. The area features Goose Lake, a 69-acre lake north of the community center, and nearby attractions including the Bundy Hill Offroad Park, promoted as the largest privately owned off-road vehicle park in southeast Michigan.
