Somerset Center is an unincorporated community located in the northeastern corner of Hillsdale County in southeast Michigan, situated within Somerset Township along U.S. Highway 12, known locally as Chicago Road. Though without legally defined boundaries or its own population count, the community maintains its own post office with the 49282 ZIP Code. The area sits at an elevation of 1,060 feet, among the highest in southeast Michigan, and sits on the outer edge of the Irish Hills region, about 1.5 miles south of the Jackson County line.
The community's early history began when Elias Alley, from Cayuga County, New York, built his home here as early as 1833. When Hillsdale County was formally organized in 1835, the area became part of Wheatland Township. Thomas Gamble became the first postmaster when the post office opened on September 9, 1835, initially named Wheatland. Through several name changes including Gambleville, Somerset, and Somerset Centre, the post office was officially respelled as Somerset Center on November 25, 1893. The community was officially platted on February 17, 1872, and received a train station when the Detroit, Hillsdale, & Southwestern Railroad was constructed, later becoming the Ypsilanti Branch of the New York Central Railroad.
A notable resident was William Herbert Lee McCourtie, born nearby in 1872, who became wealthy in the cement industry in Texas. He purchased his family farm in 1924 and transformed it into Aiden Lair, a recreation area hosting lavish events and prominent guests including Henry Ford. After his death in 1933, the township purchased the property in 1987 and converted it into McCourtie Park, now part of the US 12 Heritage Trail.
