June Lake is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Mono County, California, located twelve and a half miles south of Lee Vining against the southern rim of the Mono Basin. The developed community spreads along a five-mile stretch of California State Route 158, known as the June Lake Loop Road. At the 2020 census, the area had a population of 611 residents, though this number swells by an estimated 2,500 visitors during summer months, attracting fishermen, campers, tourists, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts.
The June Lake Loop's distinctive horseshoe-shaped valley was carved by glacial action thousands of years ago. When the Rush Creek glacier encountered the resistant rock of Reversed Peak, it split in two. The main glacier flowed north toward Rush Creek Canyon, while another branch turned south and east, eventually stopped by granitic bedrock. As the glacier receded, it left behind terminal moraine material at Oh! Ridge. A basin west of the ridge filled with spring water, creating June Lake and nearby Gull Lake. A notable geologic feature is the perched boulder beside the June Lake Fire Station, an eighteen-foot-tall glacial erratic weighing 150 tons.
The area's first inhabitants were Paiute Indians. While prospectors during the late nineteenth century found little mining interest here, the region attracted fishermen, hunters, and hikers for its scenic and recreational value. By 1915, a roadway was constructed up Rush Creek, followed by the installation of a rail tramway system for constructing two dams. The Rush Creek Hydroelectric Project became significant in California's hydroelectric development, with the power house beginning production in 1916.
