Karluk is a small census-designated place located on Kodiak Island in Alaska, situated 88 miles southwest of Kodiak City. Today, Karluk is home to just 27 residents according to the 2020 census, with the majority being Native American. The village has demonstrated resilience and community spirit throughout its history, notably participating in the rescue of seven U.S. Navy aviators in 1945 after their patrol bomber ditched offshore. Education is provided through the Karluk School, a K-12 facility operated by the Kodiak Island Borough School District. The community also maintains its cultural heritage through the Ascension of Our Lord Chapel, which was relocated in 2021 to protect it from destruction.
