Lamar is a small town in eastern Hughes County, Oklahoma, situated seven miles east of Horntown and fifteen miles east of the county seat of Holdenville. The community developed in the early nineteen hundreds after the Kansas, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway constructed a rail line in nineteen seven connecting Dustin and Calvin, with Lamar positioned midway between the two towns. A post office was established on July twenty-third, nineteen oh seven, followed by the first issue of the weekly Lamar News on September fourteenth that same year. The town incorporated on January second, nineteen oh eight. By nineteen oh nine, Lamar had grown to an estimated population of five hundred residents and boasted a bank, livery, cotton gin, lumberyard, tin shop, hardware store, and five general stores. Citizens invested in their community's future by passing a ten-thousand-dollar bond issue in nineteen oh nine to build a two-story brick school building, completed the following year. The town's population peaked at two hundred ninety-six in nineteen forty but has declined significantly since then. As of the twenty twenty census, Lamar had one hundred eighteen residents. Geographically, the town sits at the eastern foot of Lamar Mountain, which rises three hundred fifty feet above the center of town. Today Lamar is part of the Moss Public Schools district and continues as a small rural community in Hughes County.
