Stuart is a small town nestled in southeastern Hughes County, Oklahoma, with a population of 192 as of the 2020 census. The community traces its roots to the late nineteenth century, when a settlement called Hoyuby existed at this location within the Choctaw Nation. The Hoyuby post office was established in June 1892 with John H. Elliott as its first postmaster. The town experienced significant growth after 1895, when the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad, later known as the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, constructed a line through the area, linking Stuart to McAlester and Oklahoma City. On April 14, 1896, the post office was renamed Stuart in honor of Judge Charles Bingley Stuart of McAlester.
During its prosperous early years, Stuart developed into a thriving community. Berry Alexander and Mary Youngblood Nunn built the Stuart Hotel, a two-story wood-frame structure that now appears on the National Register of Historic Places. By 1909, Baptist, Christian, and Methodist churches had been established. The town supported two banks, multiple general stores, blacksmith shops, lumberyards, cotton gins, and liveries serving the agricultural region. Cotton remained the primary cash crop. The economy continued expanding through the early twentieth century with additional newspapers, a gristmill, and the Choctaw Cotton Oil Company. By the 1930s and 1940s, however, Stuart's economy contracted, with both banks eventually closing. Today, Stuart remains a rural community where most employed residents commute to jobs in nearby cities like Holdenville and McAlester.
