Lamoille is a rural census-designated place in Elko County in northeastern Nevada, situated 19 miles southeast of Elko at the base of the Ruby Mountains. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 130 and is part of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The valley's history is deeply connected to westward expansion and settlement. During the era of the California Emigrant Trail, many travelers left the main Fort Hall route along the Humboldt River to avoid overused grazing lands. They followed a Shoshone Indian path that skirted the East Humboldt and Ruby Mountains, using Lamoille Valley to rest their livestock before returning to the river. John Walker and Thomas Waterman first settled the area in 1865. Waterman named the valley after his native Vermont. In 1868, Walker established the Cottonwood Hotel, a store, and a blacksmith shop, and the settlement became known as "The Crossroads," where travelers could repair wagons and obtain food and supplies. Though the original buildings are gone, along with a later twenty-bedroom Lamoille hotel, creamery, flour mill, and dance hall, the community endures.
Today, Lamoille serves as the principal gateway to the Ruby Mountains via Nevada State Route 227 and the National Forest Scenic Byway up Lamoille Canyon. A small church, constructed on the east side of the community in 1907, remains in active use. The area also holds significance in modern history as the location where former Disney president Frank Wells died in a helicopter crash in the Nevada Ruby Mountains.
