Laughlin is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Nevada, located 90 miles south of Las Vegas at the far southern tip of the state. Situated on the Colorado River downstream from the Davis Dam and directly across from Bullhead City, Arizona, Laughlin has become known as a resort town centered on gaming and water recreation. The 2020 census recorded a population of 8,658, though the surrounding region including nearby Arizona and California communities brings the total area population to approximately 100,000.
The town was named for Don Laughlin, a Minnesota native who purchased the land in 1964. Previously known as South Pointe, the area had been established in the 1940s as a modest community serving gold and silver miners, construction workers, and fishing enthusiasts, but largely disappeared by the 1950s. Don Laughlin, who owned the 101 Club in Las Vegas, recognized the site's tourism potential and developed the Riverside Resort, which opened with just twelve slot machines and two live tables. This sparked tremendous growth through the 1980s and beyond, with numerous casinos and hotels opening, including the Bobcat Club in 1967 and the Monte Carlo in 1968. In 1987, Laughlin funded and built the Laughlin Bridge connecting to Bullhead City at a cost of 3.5 million dollars, which he donated to Nevada and Arizona. Today, the bridge carries 30,000 vehicles daily. Laughlin experiences a hot desert climate with under six inches of annual precipitation and is one of the United States' hottest cities during summer months, having recorded Nevada's highest temperature of 125 degrees Fahrenheit on June 29, 1994.
