Leighton is a small town in eastern Colbert County, Alabama, situated within the Florence-Muscle Shoals Metropolitan Statistical Area known as The Shoals. As of the 2020 census, the town had a population of 665 residents. The area's earliest settlers arrived in the early 1810s, and the community was initially called Crossroads due to its location at the intersection of two early stagecoach roads. The name changed to Leighton in honor of Reverend William Leigh, the town's first postmaster. The town developed as a cotton shipping center in the 1830s after the Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad constructed a line through the area, and Leighton officially incorporated in 1890. Originally straddling the Franklin and Lawrence County line, Leighton became wholly part of Colbert County after that county's eastern border was expanded eastward to Town Creek following the 1890 census. Today, the town remains concentrated around the intersection of County Line Road and County Road 22, with U.S. Route 72 passing just to the south and the Tennessee River several miles to the north. In recent decades, Leighton has faced significant weather challenges, including a destructive EF2 tornado on May 8, 2008, that caused considerable damage to buildings and vehicles. The town is served by three schools within the Colbert County School System and has produced several notable individuals in sports, music, and other fields.
