A devastating prairie fire swept through the area in 1880, burning from Middle Creek to Elk Creek, followed by a diphtheria outbreak that claimed many local children's lives. In 1885, Malcolm Showers himself purchased two lots and built the village's first church, serving as its Methodist minister before being succeeded by Reverend D.Y. Black. Today, Malcolm remains a quiet rural village with a population of 457 as of the 2020 census. The community benefits from its proximity to outdoor recreation areas, with Branched Oak State Recreation Area, the largest of the Salt Valley Lakes, located three and a half miles to the north, and Pawnee Lake State Recreation Area, the second largest, situated five miles to the south.
