Roca is a small village located in Lancaster County, Nebraska, situated within the Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a population of 201 residents at the 2020 census, this compact community covers just 0.14 square miles and maintains a quiet, residential character.
The village's history is deeply rooted in the stone quarrying industry. When the town was platted in 1876, residents chose the name Roca, the Spanish word for stone, to reflect the area's primary business. The quarrying tradition began in 1861 when Delos Mills settled near Salt Creek and constructed a small stone house using limestone from a natural ledge, establishing what would become a thriving industry. The Atchinson and Nebraska Railroad arrived in 1871, and a siding and station were established at the location. Haskel Warner, drawing on his experience in the New Mexico Territory, suggested the name Roca for the new town site.
The community's development accelerated after incorporation in 1876. Elmore Keys and John Meyer donated land for the town site, and Keys built a substantial stone house on a hill east of town that still stands today. In 1875, Keys and Bullock opened the Blue Stone quarry on Roca's south side, and stone from these quarries supplied building materials for Lincoln and communities beyond for over a century. The post office was established in 1894, cementing Roca's place as an established settlement in Lancaster County.
