Onalaska is an unincorporated community in Lewis County, Washington, located along State Route 508 in the valley of the South Fork of the Newaukum River. With a population of 657 as of the 2020 census, this small town has deep roots in the region's logging heritage. The community was built around a lumber mill established by the Carlisle Lumber Company in 1909, which began actual production in 1914. At its peak in 1929, the mill was a significant operation, producing 300,000 board feet of lumber daily with company inventory exceeding 20 million board feet. The town's population reached approximately 1,000 during this prosperous era, supported by 175 single-family homes and numerous bunkhouses. The mill employed a substantial workforce that included Japanese and Japanese Americans, who lived in designated neighborhoods with streets named Oriental Avenue, Nippon Avenue, and Tokyo Avenue. The Great Depression brought hardship, however, and declining timber prices combined with increased unionization efforts led the Carlisle family to close the facility. The mill was sold for scrap during World War II. Today, a surviving 225-foot smokestack near Carlisle Lake, built between 1918 and 1920, stands as the last trace of one of Washington state's most successful mid-sized sawmills and was listed to the Washington Heritage Register in May 2021. The community continues to thrive through local initiatives like the Onalaska Apple Harvest Festival, first held in 2009, and maintains three heritage barns registered on the Washington State Heritage Barn Register.
