Vader is a small city in Lewis County, Washington with roots stretching back to the 1870s. The community began under the name Kraft, then became known as Little Falls after a waterfall on nearby Olequa Creek. After disputes over naming confusion with other communities, the town was officially renamed Vader in 1913 to honor Martin Vader, a German resident and American Civil War veteran. The city was incorporated in 1906 and soon became one of the largest communities between Portland and Tacoma, with a peak population that may have reached as high as 5,000 residents. During this prosperous era, Vader supported logging and clay manufacturing industries, along with diverse businesses including an opera house, bowling alley, and moving picture theater.
The early twentieth century brought significant challenges. Major fires destroyed the sawmill in 1916 and again in 1918, and additional fires devastated the clay factory in 1914 and 1925. These disasters led to decades of economic decline. By the 2000s, the community faced further hardship when lack of funding closed the local school. In recent years, Vader has undertaken revival efforts, highlighting its logging heritage and historic structures including the Old City Jail and two National Register of Historic Places properties. The community continues to celebrate its past through an annual May Day Festival that began in the 1950s. According to the 2020 census, Vader's population has rebounded to levels not seen since 1910, offering hope for the community's continued recovery.
