Prairie View is an unincorporated community in southern Lake County, Illinois, situated within Vernon Township. Though surrounding communities like Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove have annexed portions of neighboring settlements, Prairie View itself has largely remained independent, though tiny sections have been absorbed by these neighboring towns. In recent decades, the community has naturally divided into two distinct sections as development and annexation patterns shaped its geography.
The northern section, home to the Prairie View Metra station, sits near Adlai E. Stevenson High School and is bordered by Vernon Hills to the north, Lincolnshire to the east, and Buffalo Grove to the south and west. This area receives water, sewer, and fire services from Lincolnshire, while Vernon Township and Lake County provide other services. A modern subdivision called Krisview Acres, built during the 1990s on former farmland, contains approximately fifty homes. The original residences of the northern section, roughly twenty-eight homes, were constructed piecemeal between the late nineteenth century and early 1980s along Easton Avenue, Main Street, and nearby side streets.
The southern section, called Horatio Gardens, lies completely surrounded by Buffalo Grove near the Buffalo Grove train station. Residents here have historically resisted annexation by Buffalo Grove Park District and continue to maintain their independent status within unincorporated Prairie View.
