Zion is a city in Lake County, Illinois, located about forty miles north of Chicago. Founded in 1900 by John Alexander Dowie, a Scottish-Australian evangelical minister and faith healer who had migrated to the United States in 1888, the city was named after Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Dowie personally owned all of the land and most businesses in the newly established community, and he founded the Zion Tabernacle of the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church, which served as the town's only church. The structure was built in the early 1900s but was burned down in 1937 following decades of tumultuous leadership by Dowie's successor, Wilbur Glenn Voliva.
The city's religious origins were reflected in its original seal, which featured Christian symbols including a crown, scepter, dove, and cross. However, a 1990 Federal Court case ruled that these religious symbols could not appear on city seals and emblems. The phrase "In God We Trust" was permitted on the new seal since it was already accepted religious language in the public arena.
According to the 2020 census, Zion had a population of 24,655 residents spread across 9.93 square miles.
