Reading is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, located 16 miles north of central Boston, with a population of 25,518 at the 2020 census. The area was first settled in the 1630s when Massachusetts Bay Colony residents arrived from England. In 1639, citizens of Lynn petitioned for an inland plantation and were granted ten square miles of land. The initial settlement, called Lynn Village, was established on the south shore of the Great Pond, now Lake Quannapowitt. On June 10, 1644, the settlement was incorporated as the town of Reading, named after Reading in England. Thomas Parker was instrumental in founding Reading and helped establish the 12th Congregational Church while serving as a selectman and judicial commissioner.
During the 19th century, Reading transformed into a manufacturing hub, with major factories producing furniture, clocks, organ pipes, chairs, cabinets, shoes, and neckties. The arrival of the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1845 improved access to Boston and southern markets. The town also became known for casket manufacturing. Reading played an active role during the American Revolutionary War, particularly in pursuing the retreating British after Lexington and Concord. John Brooks, a Reading resident who became Governor of Massachusetts, served as a captain of the Fourth Company of Minute.
In the 20th century, Reading evolved into a residential community with commuter rail service to Boston. The town adopted a representative town meeting form of government in 1944, replacing its traditional open town meeting system with a town manager structure to handle daily operations.
