The area's recorded history begins in 1632 when Governor Winthrop and his party explored the territory, discovering Spot Pond and dining at what they called Cheese Rock, now known as Bear Hill. Colonial settlement arrived in 1634, initially as part of Charlestown. As the population grew in the northeastern portion of the town, residents found themselves too distant from Charlestown's church and school. In 1725, Captain Benjamin Geary and 53 other residents petitioned for separation, and the General Court established Stoneham as its own township on December 17, 1725. The town quickly met its obligations, erecting its first meetinghouse and burying ground in 1726 and organizing its first church in 1729. During the Industrial Revolution, Stoneham flourished as a major shoe-manufacturing center, transforming from a small colonial settlement into a thriving community.
