Red Bluff is the county seat of Tehama County, located in the northern Sacramento Valley, 131 miles north of Sacramento and 31 miles south of Redding. When Tehama County was created in 1856, Red Bluff became the county seat, with the first permanent courthouse built by 1859.
The arrival of the railroad in 1872 brought considerable prosperity, as Red Bluff served as the terminus for several years before the line extended north toward Redding in the 1880s. As early as 1852, a Chinatown District was established to serve the growing Chinese population arriving at this important steamboat landing. On October 29, 2022, this historic district was officially recognized.
