Saint Georges is an unincorporated town in New Castle County, Delaware, located on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal roughly midway between the Delaware River and Chesapeake Bay. The community was settled before 1730 at the head of Saint Georges Creek, and a tavern was established there in 1735. King's Highway was constructed through the settlement in 1762, and Saint Georges was formally incorporated as a town in 1825. However, the town's character changed significantly after the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal divided it and a newer bridge bypassed the community, leading residents to request that their charter be revoked in 1940.
The area has experienced dramatic events tied to its location on the canal. A lift bridge built in 1923 collapsed on January 10, 1939, when the six-thousand-ton freighter Waukegan lost control and struck the bridge's north tower, resulting in two deaths among the bridge's tender and electrician. Today, two major bridges serve the area: the Senator William V. Roth Jr. Bridge, which opened in 1995 as a cable-stayed span carrying Delaware Route 1, and the Saint Georges Bridge carrying U.S. Route 13 over the canal.
